The Top 10 Drywall Tools You Need To Know

Taking on a construction or repair project requires a substantial amount of work and the correct drywall tools for the job. If you are someone who is either a contractor or looking to start your own renovation project, we will inform you on the top ten tools used for working with drywall. See our list to refresh yourself on the basics. This article shows the tools that help you hang and mud a drywall correctly.

1. Joint Knives

A drywall knife – also known as a putty/joint knife,  is a must have tool for anyone that plans to work with drywall. Used to cover blemishes such as nail spots, as well as, joints between sheets and other indentations in the board. Using a drywall knife with drywall compound, otherwise known as mud, smooths wall-coverings and patching holes. In some instances, joint compound and a drywall knife are used to cover the seams of paper or fiberglass drywall.

We have a wide range of drywall knives from brands such as Level 5 and Circle Brand.

Otherwise known as a keyhole or drywall saw, a jab saw is a long narrow saw used for cutting and adjusting various building materials ranging from drywall, plastic, and plasterboard. We carry both Level 5 and Rockeater jab saws.

If you require a tool that cuts through stronger material, you can always look up compass saws, jigsaws and rotary saws.

A rotary saw, otherwise known as a spiral saw or a cut out tool, is the perfect drywall tool used for precision cutting. The primary use of a rotary saw is for cutting drywall in any direction without the need of having a pilot hole in wallboard. It was later discovered this tool cuts through other materials making it a great multi-purpose tool.

The most common brand for this type of tool is Rotozip. Rotozip was founded by Bob Kopras who was an American drywall installer that made this type of saw famous. Rotozip was then acquired by Bosch Tool Corp in 2003.

4. Skimming Blades

Skimming blades makes sure that a wall is equally flat while applying the final coat on drywall. Skimming blades skim across a wall to even out the drywall removing any bumps.  The skimming blades reduces material waste and time from sanding for both drywall and plaster.

Made from European stainless-steel blades, Level 5’s skimming blades delivers a fast glass-like finish. The aluminum housing of the skimming blade means it can withstand harsher weather such as hot days without warping. The blade itself are replaceable meaning you only have to replace the blade and not the whole tool.

For applying the finishing touches you will need to apply a sander. Sanders are used to smooth the surface using sandpaper. There are two sanders that are supplied by Master Building Materials. The first is the Mirka LEROS and the second is the DeWalt 20v MAX.

The Mirka LEROS is used for both walls and ceilings. The LEROS is entirely brushless and has a 180-degree flexible head. The Mirka LEROS has both a flexible and practical design which provides an ergonomic solution for the user’s back and body.

The DEWALT cordless drywall sander features increased runtime and durability. This cordless drywall sander is fitted with an attachment for AIRLOCK dust extractors.

Drywall banjos are a fantastic tool for taping joints and seams quickly and efficiently. Banjos allow for simultaneous application of both compound and joint tape on flat joints removing the need to adjust your tape after application.

A drywall banjo is considered a semi-automatic tool for drywall because while it applies both compound and tape it does not cut while taping. There is another tool that does offer automatic cutting along with application.

If you want to go fully automatic with your taping needs, look no further than using a drywall bazooka. Fully automatic drywall tapers such as the Columbia Predator not only applies tape and compound at the same time but also cuts the tape as it is applied.

Flex trowels have become a must have tool for anyone planning to use plaster in their project. The main reason for using a flex trowel over a standard trowel is that a flexible trowel is in contact with the surface more during the troweling stage.

When it comes to applying your first, second, or third coat of compound a flat box is the perfect tool. Instead of applying compound by hand in a slow and painful method, you can use a flat box to apply compound in a fast and efficient manner. We carry both Columbia Fat Boy and Level 5 flat boxes.

Of course, what good is a job without having everything be on the level. A laser level is key in making sure the wall that you are constructing is aligned correctly. DEWALT has a lineup of laser levels that fit any job you require. We recommend the DW089K as it has a three-beam laser that not only has horizontal and vertical lines but also has one 90-degree beam. Laser brightness is also twice as bright as a regular laser line which is useful for bright job sites with difficult visibility.
