The Different Types of Spray Foam

Spray foam insulation is one of the most common forms of insulation. Spray foam insulation is a chemical mixture in liquid form. Spray foam makes a great insulation solution since the volume can be reduced before application meaning you can carry large amounts of foam in a smaller volume.

Once it is applied through a spray foam gun it expands creating a tight barrier keeping the home cool and warm when desired. This makes spray foam insulation a desirable material for places such as crawlspaces, ducts, attics, and more.

Spray foam can be categorized into two different types of spray foam: light-density open-cell spray foam and medium-density closed-cell spray foam.

Light-density open-cell spray foam

Open cell spray foam, otherwise known as half-pound foam, is a sponge-like semi-rigid spray foam. This spray expands while being installed. While the spray foam expands, the spray foam fits in most cracks and crevices creating airtight seals. Light-density open-cell spray foam sticks to all types of surfaces. Low-density open-cell spray foam starts at 3.6 per inch.

What are the advantages of using light-density open-cell spray foam?

Light-density open-cell spray foam excels at being an effective air and sound barrier. Light-density open-cell foam is also flexible. As a home expands and contracts throughout the years and seasons, the foam will also move with the movement of the house. This limits the repairs required for the lifespan of the home.

Medium density closed cell spray foam

Medium density closed cell spray foam is also referred to as two-pound spray foam. The reason it is referred to as two-pound spray foam is because of how heavy the foam becomes once it expands. Closed-cell foam is more rigid than open-cell foam and has a higher long-term thermal resistance comparatively. The R-value of medium-density closed-cell foam starts at 5.7 per inch.

What are the advantages of using medium-density closed-cell spray foam?

The biggest positive to using closed-cell spray foam is that it acts as a vapour barrier and as an air barrier at the same time. Another unique aspect of using medium-density closed-cell spray is that it adds to the structural strength of the walls and ceilings.

High-density closed-cell spray foam

High-density closed-cell spray foam is, as the name suggests, heavier than the other two types of spray foam. High-density foam is used for exterior walls and roofing applications. Heavier foam can withstand more punishment than the other two types. High-density closed-cell spray foam starts at 5.5 per inch.

What are the advantages of using high-density closed-cell spray foam?

High-density closed-cell spray foam reduces energy costs in the long run due to its inherent thermal resistance properties. Additionally, high-density spray foam also provides protection against air and water infiltration which strengthens the structural integrity of the building.
